Before You Panic, Read This.

Over the last year, we’ve had more and more clients ask the same question:
“I started Ozempic (or Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound)… is it making my hair fall out?”
If you’ve noticed more hair in your brush, your shower drain, or wrapped around your vacuum roller (because apparently that’s where it all ends up 😅), take a deep breath.
The good news is that it’s usually temporary.
The Medication Probably Isn’t the Problem
Despite what social media might have you believe, current research suggests that GLP-1 medications aren’t directly attacking your hair follicles.
What’s actually happening is that your body is responding to rapid weight loss.
Hair is considered a “luxury” by your body. When you’re losing weight quickly, eating less, or not getting enough nutrients, your body shifts its focus to keeping your heart, brain, and other vital organs healthy.
Unfortunately, your hair gets bumped down the priority list.
Why Does It Start Months After You Lose Weight?
This is what confuses most people.
Hair grows in cycles. When your body experiences a major stress—rapid weight loss included—it can push more hairs into what’s called the resting phase.
Those hairs don’t fall out immediately.
Instead, they usually shed 2 to 4 months later, making it seem like the medication suddenly caused the problem when it’s actually a delayed response.
This condition is called telogen effluvium, and it’s one of the most common forms of temporary hair loss.
What Does It Look Like?
Most people notice:
- More hair coming out in the shower
- Hair all over the bathroom floor
- More strands in their brush
- A thinner ponytail
- Less overall volume
- A wider-looking part
The important thing is that it’s usually diffuse shedding—meaning it’s thinning all over rather than creating bald patches.
Can You Prevent It?
While there’s no magic pill (wouldn’t that be nice?), you can absolutely support healthy hair while you’re on your weight-loss journey.
Here are the biggest things to focus on:
✔ Eat enough protein. Hair is made primarily of protein, and if your body doesn’t have enough, it has to make choices.
✔ Stay hydrated.
✔ Don’t skip your vitamins if your healthcare provider recommends them.
✔ Ask your doctor to check nutrients like iron, ferritin, vitamin D, B12, and zinc if the shedding seems excessive.
✔ Avoid crash dieting. Slow and steady isn’t just better for weight loss—it’s better for your hair too.
Will My Hair Grow Back?
For the vast majority of people…
Yes.
Because the hair follicle isn’t permanently damaged, new hair usually begins growing once your body has adjusted and is getting the nutrients it needs.
Most people notice shedding slow down within a few months, with fuller growth returning over the following several months.
Hair growth takes time, so patience is part of the process—even if that’s the least fun answer.
What We Can Do at the Salon
We can’t stop telogen effluvium (hair shedding).
But we can help you protect the hair you still have while the new growth catches up.
That might include:
- Recommending strengthening products
- Keeping your scalp healthy
- Suggesting haircuts that create the appearance of more fullness
- Avoiding unnecessary chemical or heat damage
- Teaching you how to care for fragile hair at home
Our goal isn’t to sell you products you don’t need. It’s to help you understand what’s happening and give your hair the best chance to recover.
One Last Thing…
If your hair loss is severe, you’re seeing bald spots, your scalp is itchy or inflamed, or the shedding continues for more than six months, it’s important to check in with your healthcare provider or a dermatologist. Hair loss isn’t always related to GLP-1 medications, and sometimes there’s another issue that needs to be addressed.
Remember…
Losing weight is a huge accomplishment, and sometimes your hair needs a little time to catch up.
Be kind to your body. Feed it well. Give it time.
And if you’re worried, bring it up at your next appointment. We’d much rather answer your questions than have you wondering if you’re doing something wrong.
At Mane Street Hair & Color Studio, we believe that educated clients make confident decisions—and we’re hair for you every step of the journey.
