Definitions and Hair Terminology

Below is a list of words used in the hair industry that most people are unfamiliar with… either the definition or pronunciation or application. Enjoy!

Balayage

A technique for highlighting the hair in which the dye is painted on in such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking effect.  This is an open air technique, meaning you don’t have foils in your hair and sit under a dryer.
**IF YOU HAVE DYE IN YOUR HAIR YOU CANNOT HAVE THIS SERVICE**
We can get the same look with foil highlights but artificial dye is too hard to break through without heat and would result in orange, off tone results. Yuck!
Expect to be in the chair for 3-4 hours for this service.

Demi Permanent

Demi-permanent color contains no ammonia and deposits only. It is mixed with a low-volume developer to help open the cuticle and lasts 12-16 weeks. This type of color is great for blending gray, enhancing natural color, refreshing color, toning highlights, or for corrective work.

Foil Techniques

Partial Highlights

Partial Highlighting covers the mohawk part of the head only. Expect to be in the chair for 2 hours.

Half Head Highlights

Half head highlights consist of the entire front of the head back to just below the crown of the head. The underneath and nape in back is left alone. Expect to be in the chair for 2.5-3 hours.

Full Highlights

Full highlights cover the entire head and is usually used for maximum lightness. Expect to be in the chair for 3.5 hours.

Toner

A hair toner is temporary. They can be clear to just add shine or have some pigment to complement the tone of the hair or negate or enhance a specific tone of a highlight. It simply coats or sits on top of the hair. Lasts approximately 4-8 weeks. This service is usually done after a highlight and in-between highlight appointments.

Keratin Treatment

Keratin Treatments are a semi-permanent hair straightening method done by temporarily sealing a liquid keratin and a preservative solution into the hair with a hair iron.  They are meant to mostly or partially eliminate hair frizz and straighten curls and waves. They can be performed on all types of hair, whether natural or chemically treated (bleached, highlighted, colored, permed, relaxed or previously straightened). The effect usually lasts about three to six months depending on hair type and daily regimen. Treatment must be repeated every few months to straighten the new hair growth.

Semi Permanent / Fashion  Colors

Semipermanent hair color is defined as color that is deposit only and typically lasts 2-6 weeks depending on the hair’s porosity and condition. Semipermanent hair color usually has low or no ammonia and is a great options for clients that are concerned with the damaging effects of peroxide. These tend to be fashion colors or toners. Get Pure Treatment

Did you know that everyday products and medicines you use can build up in your hair? Medications, minerals from drinking well water, algaecides and chemicals from swimming pools and spas, cigarette smoke and styling products can all build up in your hair.

Get Pure is a deep detoxifying treatment that nearly 100% removes all types of hair build up, including metallic deposits such as copper and iron that are left behind from our water supply.

Unlike other clarifying shampoos and treatments, GET PURE removes build up and deposits without removing hair color and the essential fatty acids and nutrients needed to keep your hair healthy and vibrant. Failure to remove such deposits could affect the performance of products used on a daily basis. Shampoos and conditioners will not work to their full ability and styling and finishing products may not live up to their claims.

At Mane Street, we do a get pure treatment 2-3x per year on our chemical service guests. We do this because build up in the hair can result in discoloration, off tones, poor gray coverage, uneven color and swollen or hot foils that could lead to burnt scalps. Get Pure is our insurance that we can give you the best color service possible without fighting metals, minerals, and other deposits we can’t see with the naked eye.

This service is a game changer for anyone who is frustrated with their bad hair days! Reset your hair to “factory settings” with a GET PURE treatment today!
